And I'm not even eating cheese!!

About a year ago, my uncle was diagnosed with colon cancer. He only lived 9 months after that. I had never seen anything like it. If you've never seen how fast cancer can destroy, count your blessings. My uncle was battling a vicious monster. His body was dying everyday, despite the chemo and radiation and the 10+ pills he was taking every day. It was like nothing I had ever seen before in my life.

During that time, I stumbled upon a movie called "The Beautiful Truth". It totally goes against everything western medicine says. There are cures for cancer, and that shouldn't be a surprise. But unfortunately that bold statement will upset and confuse a lot of you.

My sister and I were fortunate to be exposed to alternative medicine at an early age. I think I was 8 when I first went to get acupuncture. And we've taken herbs, had moxibustion and magnet therapy before we were in high school. It's no wonder I'm a massage therapist now. I love alternative medicine and stories of healers and witch doctors and prayer healing thousands of people at once. ( I also love ghost hunters).

My doctor had been telling me for years to stop eating red meat and cheese and milk, that it's making me sick and fat. But I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself. My uncle's diet consisted of meat, grease, cheese and milk, and all in that order. Being Hispanic, the choices are limited to greasy or greasier, cheesy or smothered. According to The Beautiful Truth, that's were some cancers come from, our diets.

There is tons of research out there that links food and cancers and disease. The China Study is full of statistics and 30 years of research. So I took all those beliefs and took them as my own. I believe that our diet has a lot to do with disease. And didn't some famous guy say "You are what you eat". So if we eat bad, fake food, are we not bad and fake in the inside? i.e. stints, pacemakers, artificial limbs. But if we eat fresh, clean, natural foods we get strong, fresh, clean on the inside. Coincidence? I'm not good at math but that sure does seem like two and two put together.

So this journey in my life is about eating better. Once I learn this, I'll start another journey. It would also be nice for my next journey would be to win the lottery. ;) I can't even tell you how many times I've gone to acupuncture for weight-loss. And how many times I didn't take my herbs like he said to, or even changed my diet like I said I would. (And I wonder why I'm slowly gaining weight every year.)

Maybe that's my pace. Slow. Maybe the real journey here is patience? Whatever it is, all I know is I'm hungry. And not for tofu or veggies. I've been eating that crap every day since labor day. That's the last holiday we got to spend with my uncle. Now that I think about it, it's so stupid how we humans, (I hear we're the most intelligent creatures?) start new changes. We eat all the bad food we can before we start a diet. We get all wasted and crazy to celebrate never being wasted and crazy again. We smoke a pack of cigarettes before we quit smoking. Now does that make any sense?

I think it's safe to say that we aren't too bright. My boyfriend and I decided we were gonna be smarter than that. So to celebrate the knowledge we gained about diseases, we ate steaks and hot dogs and cheese dip ( my boyfriend didn't because he has thing think I've heard of called will power). I could've sworn I was smarter than everyone. Dangit. So we haven't eaten red meat, cheese, or milk for almost 5 months. My boyfriend is down 30 lbs. I'm up 3.

I think I'm going to blame this one on hormones. It couldn't possibly be because I don't drink water any more or that the most exercise I get is walking to the mail box? Or that I just ate another cake ball, and I ate a piece of pie with ice cream on top about an hour ago? Nope. It's gotta be hormones. I have my period. I'm retaining water. I have a food allergy. The full moon is tomorrow. Yup, that's it. It's not my fault.

  1. I have also been influenced by the China Study- to think that 75% of the world doesn't have the diseases of affluence that we in the US suffer from: heart disease, cancer, diabetes to name a few.

I just read the book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. http://www.heartattackproof.com/and have adopted a plant based lifestyle- the biggest change he advocated was giving up oil- even olive oil-- now the pounds are sliding off and I am hoping to have a healthy BMI within a year.
